Rhododendron auriculatum, a very late flowering large evergreen shrub or small tree native to Central. China. It is among the last rhododendrons to bloom, usually around or just after the longest day, and because of the intensity of the summer sun its scented white flowers can burn even before they are fully open. First introduced to western gardens in 1901 by Ernest. Wilson, it can ultimately grow to 10m tall
