Asian Pear, Nashi Pear or Sand Pear (<i>Pyrus pyrifolia</i>), a deciduous tree up to 12m tall, native to central and western China. The fruits are edible and similar to the common pear, but rather more watery with a slight hint of apple flavour. Commercial cultivars have flesh with quite a smooth consistency but the fruit of the wild plant can be somewhat gritty, hence the name. Sand Pear. Order: Rosales, Family: Rosaceae
