The autumn foliage of Chinese Sassafras or Tzumu (Sassafras tzumu) showing the pale undersides of the leaves. This 30m tall deciduous tree is native to central and western China. Small yellow flowers appear in spring to early summer and on female trees are followed by blue-black fruits in red-stemmed cups. The foliage is aromatic and often colours well in autumn. Sassafras extracts have long been used in flavourings and herbal medicines but are now regarded as toxic and likely carcinogens. sassafras-3283htm'>Sassafras. Lauraceae.
