Small-leaved Milk Tree or Turepo (Streblus heterophyllus [syn. Paratrophis microphylla]), an evergreen tree to 12m tall found over much of New Zealand but only in small numbers. Sprays of small yellow-green flowers are followed by red fruits. The name milk tree comes from the sweet milky sap that exudes from the trunk when cut. Early European settlers in New Zealand sometimes used it as a substitute for milk and sugar in tea or coffee. Order: Rosales, Family: Moraceae
