The late summer foliage of White Sassafras, Red Sassafras or Silky Sassafras (Sassafras albidum), a 15-20m tall, deciduous tree native that occurs naturally through much of the eastern half of the United States and the extreme south of Canada The foliage is variable and may be unlobed, as seen here, or have two or three lobes. Racemes of small yellow-green flowers appear before the foliage and are followed by small red-stemmed purple-black drupes.
