Large-leaved Milk Tree or Turepo (Streblus banksii [syn. Paratrophis banksii]), an evergreen shrub to small tree found over much of New Zealand. When young it is a dense shrub with a divaricating tangle of wiry branches with tiny leaves, but as it matures it develops an erect habit and the leaves become larger. The small cream to buff flowers are followed by red fruits. The name milk tree comes from the sweet milky sap that exudes from the trunk when cut. Early European settlers in New Zealand sometimes used it as a substitute for milk and sugar in tea or coffee. Order: Rosales, Family: Moraceae
