The spines on the underside of a leaf of New Zealand Sow Thistle or Puha (Sonchus kirkii), an annual soft thistle native to New Zealand Although widely considered to be a weed, its foliage was an important part of the Maori diet and in recent years the plant has become far less common. Its leaves are smooth, though they do have soft spines on the mid rib and leaf edges, and are often undivided on young plants.
