The mature seedheads of New Zealand Sow Thistle or Puha (<i>Sonchus kirkii</i>), an annual soft thistle native to New Zealand Although widely considered to be a weed, its foliage was an important part of the Maori diet and in recent years the plant has become far less common. Its leaves are smooth edged, but have small, soft spines on the midrib, and are usually undivided on young plants.
