Rhododendron griersonianum, a mid-spring-flowering evergreen shrub or small tree native to southern China and northern Myanmar (Burma). It has fairly narrow, light to mid-green leaves up to 20cm long. The underside of the foliage has a variable cover of pale indumentum. The flowers, which are borne in loose trusses are a distinctive light red shade, sometimes referred to as geranium red. Although seldom a neat bush and with foliage that is inclined to brown at the tips, Rhododendron griersonianum was very important in developing compact, red- to orange-flowered, early to mid-20th century British hybrids, such as the 'Fabia' grex, 'Winsome', 'Goblin' and 'Elizabeth', that when crossed with later American hybrids have produced some of the most spectacular cultivars, such as 'Jingle Bells'. Order: Ericales, Family: Ericaceae
