Rhododendron 'Lady Alice Fitzwilliam' (<i>Rhododendron edgeworthii</i> hybrid</i>), a fragrant-flowered hybrid that dates from before 1881, when it received the RHS First Class Certificate. The floral effect is similar to the better-known 'Fragrantissimum', but the plant is smaller and more compact, and the flowers have a conspicuous golden-yellow throat. It will eventually grow to around 1.5m high and wide. It is somewhat frost tender and was initially treated as a greenhouse plant in Britain. There have been several Lady Alice Fitzwilliams, but the one this plant was named for was a 19th century social benefactor with an interest in health issues. In 1888 she patented the Fitzwilliam ambulance, a rescue device for miners. Order: Ericales, Family: Ericaceae
