Asian Pear, Nashi Pear or Sand Pear (<i>Pyrus pyrifolia</i>), a deciduous tree up to 12m tall, native to central and western China. The fruits are edible and similar to the common pear, but rather watery with a slight hint of apple flavour. Commercial cultivars have flesh with quite a smooth consistency, but the fruit of the wild plant, as shown here, can be somewhat gritty, hence the name. Sand Pear. In mild climates fruits can remain on the tree through winter, sometimes right up until flowering time. Order: Rosales, Family: Rosaceae
